Almost 21,000 solar panels are now online at the Bristol Transfer Station in Bristol, R.I.
The solar panel field covers more than 90 acres, making it the largest landfill solar farm in Rhode Island. The site is expected to generate 8.7 kilowatt hours annually, according to Laura Frazier, the managing director of business development and strategy at NuGen Capital.
The generated green energy will be allocated to Toray Plastics as the North Kingstown company bought out for the next 25 years.
The landfill, while more expensive to build on, offers a few perks to the operation, like not needing to clear any land away for construction. Plus, the project didn’t face any opposition from neighboring residents.
