The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 and Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis are collaborating in an effort to expand environmental and social justice education.
The partnership, solidified in a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU, aims to provide students with scientific collaboration, outreach and career opportunities, aligning with the EPA's commitment to educational equity and diversity.
“This partnership is incredibly important for EPA Region 7,” commented EPA Region 7 Administrator Meg McCollister. “Through the opportunities presented in this MOU, students of Harris-Stowe State University have the potential to become future leaders in the areas of human health and the environment. Additionally, the MOU will allow EPA to leverage the university’s Institute for Social Justice, enhancing our approach to fair and equitable policies across our region.”
The MOU outlines five key areas of collaboration:
Joint Research Projects: Harris-Stowe and EPA Region 7 will coordinate on identifying research priorities of mutual benefit.
Faculty Research Participation: The agreement encourages visits and collaboration between faculty, staff, and students from both institutions.
Student Internships and Employment: Harris-Stowe students will have access to EPA programs, and the university will facilitate student and staff participation in EPA internship opportunities.
Technical Assistance/Lectures/Seminar Speakers: The institutions will explore opportunities for joint consultations, workshops, and seminars.
Outreach Program: EPA Region 7 will engage with college-sponsored events, and Harris-Stowe will notify the EPA of relevant outreach activities.
Administrator McCollister emphasized the importance of the partnership, stating that it allows the EPA to leverage Harris-Stowe's Institute for Social Justice, enhancing their approach to fair and equitable policies across the region. Dr. Collins Smith expressed excitement about expanding learning experiences and opportunities for students and faculty.
This collaboration supports EPA initiatives such as Executive Order 14041, the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, and the EPA’s Strategic Plan to Advance Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility. The MOU reflects a commitment to developing environmental leaders in underserved communities, reinforcing HBCUs/MSIs, and advancing the EPA's mission to protect human health and the environment.
