Indiana Residents Against Proposed Waste Transfer Station

Residents near Cicero, Ind., just north of Indianapolis, are concerned over a proposal to build a solid-waste transfer station in the area.

Residents near Cicero, Ind., just north of Indianapolis, are concerned over a proposal to build a solid-waste transfer station in the area.

The new site would reside 4.5 miles west of Cicero. Currently, a metal scrap yard sits at the site and the proposal wants to convert it into a trash transfer station. However, residents are concerned that a waste transfer station will produce foul smells and negatively impact area traffic.

The transfer station would see household and business waste from Hamilton County. Trash will be at the transfer station for less than 24 hours before heading to landfills or recycling facilities.

“Indiana Department of Environmental Management has very strict requirements about what is being handled in these facilities. Liquid waste, biohazard, biomedical waste, medical waste, and hazardous waste are strictly prohibited,” Moench said.
