EPA to Charge Oil, Gas Companies Federal Fee for High Methane Emission Output

New from the Biden Administration, oil and natural gas companies will have to pay a federal fee if they are found to be emitting methane at certain levels.

The new rule from the EPA comes from a 2022 climate law, imposing the fee to encourage the industry to reduce emissions of methane. Companies could face fees of $900 to $1,500 per ton for excess methane emissions.

The rule is set to become final early next year.
