The city of Destin, Fla.’s current contract with Waste Management expires on September 30, but Destin City Manager Carisse LeJeune just received approval to negotiate a five-year contract extension with the company.
Currently, Waste Management charges residential customers $21.10 per month for twice-a-week trash pickup and once-a-week recycling and yard waste pickup. In the new proposed contract extension, Destin officials would like to replace customers’ existing 18-gallon recycling bins with 96-gallon recycling carts and continue to offer a discount to senior citizens.

The City Council Monday gave City Manager Carisse LeJeune the go-ahead to negotiate a new five-year contract with Waste Management.
The city’s current one-year extension of a five-year franchise agreement with the company expires Sept. 30. A negotiated proposed contract, including costs to customers, will be presented to the council at a later meeting for its approval.
Waste Management has about 5,300 residential customers in Destin, where it has served as the city’s garbage hauler since 2006, according to city spokesman Doug Rainer.
