The City of Montgomery, Ala.’s recycling facility has been closed for 17 months, and now, the city is struggling to develop a new recycling program because it’s currently not producing enough trash to make a new program sustainable.
The city’s former recycling facility required 150,000 tons of trash a year to operate profitably, but in its final year, it only received 78,000 from Montgomery and 24,000 from surrounding areas.
The city is currently looking into new recycling options to create a sustainable recycling program.

Montgomery is not producing enough trash to make a recycling program sustainable, according to officials who have studied the issue.
Four major Alabama cities have a similar population size -- Huntsville, Birmingham, Mobile and Montgomery. The capital city is the only one without recycling and the only one facing doubts about its ability to maintain a recycling program, Montgomery Advertiser reported.
