Socorro, N.M., Aims to Open Recycling Center at Local Landfill
Instead of re-registering with the Solid Waste Bureau of the New Mexico Environment Department, the city plans on closing its recycling center and starting recycling operations at its landfill.

The Solid Waste Bureau (SWB) of the New Mexico Environment Department recently issued a response to a compliance order requiring the city of Socorro, N.M., to immediately close operations at the Socorro recycling center. This compliance order was issued because the city did not re-register the center with the SWB, which is a violation.
Instead of re-registering with the SWB and being required to keep an employee staffing the center at all times during hours of operation, the city plans on closing the recycling center and starting recycling operations at the landfill.

The City of Socorro will hopefully have a new recycling center up and running sometime in the near future, according to Mayor Ravi Bhasker.
Approximately two weeks ago the Solid Waste Bureau of the New Mexico Environment Department issued a response to a compliance order requiring the City to close operations at the Socorro recycling center immediately. Bhasker said that compliance order was issued because the City hadn't re-registered the center with the Bureau and would be in violation if it didn't do so immediately.
