How Much the Industry’s Top CEOs Got Paid in 2016

Compensation for CEOs of the industry’s public companies rose in 2016. In addition to strong operational results, some key external events fueled the increases.

Waste Management saw head honcho David Steiner step down and collect a retirement package and new CEO Jim Fish took over.

Waste Connections completed its giant merger with Progressive Waste Solutions, boosting Ron Mittestaedt’s compensation. And Advanced Disposal completed a long awaited IPO, with Richard Burke seeing a boost in his total compensation as a result.

The string of strong operational results has continued early in 2017. Volumes and pricing continue to grow for most companies. They are also posting healthy free cash flow numbers. In addition, a rebound in commodities pricing has helped with recycling businesses for haulers.

It’s with this context that we take a look at the total compensation for 13 of the industry's CEOs in 2016.
