Canadian Retailer Rona Launches Recycling Station Program

Rona Inc., a Canadian hardware retailer, has launched a recycling station program nationwide.

The Boucherville, Quebec-based Rona said in a news release the stations are located near a store entrance for the public recycling products not permitted in household recycling containers. Each station contains six compartments for recycling batteries, compact fluorescent bulbs, power tool accessories such as blades, cardboard and paper, plastics, glass and metals, and mobile phones.

Stores with less available space can provide smaller stations that contain four compartments instead of six.

The program is the result of partnerships between the company and local organizations that recycle items deposited at the stations.

Green Tec-Think Recycle handles the mobile phone recycling. For phones that can’t be reconditioned, the company recovers valuable metals such as copper or gold and sells them to manufacturers for new products. The company will donate the proceeds to the Rona Foundation, which helps underprivileged youth.
