Alliance for Downtown New York Celebrates Recycling Milestone
The Alliance for Downtown New York recently celebrated a new milestone of recycling 1,000 tons of glass, plastic, metal and paper.
The Alliance for Downtown New York, which has a mission to provide service, advocacy, research and information to advance Lower Manhattan as a global model of a 21st century Central Business District for businesses, residents and visitors, recently celebrated a new milestone of recycling 1,000 tons of glass, plastic, metal and paper.
"'Clean and safe' has long been the motto for the Alliance's on-the-streets efforts,” said Jessica Lappin, president of the Alliance for Downtown New York, in a statement. “This milestone shows how much we can accomplish, and how we can reduce waste, by working with our partners at the NYC Department of Sanitation, NYC EDC and with the support of Council Member Margaret Chin. I am very proud of hitting this number and what it means for our environment, our city and our planet."
Since its launch in 2014, the Alliance's recycling initiative has placed nearly 180 Bigbelly compactors across the one-square-mile district and helped divert one-third of all of the neighborhood's waste into recycling.
"I am thrilled to join Jessica Lappin, president of the Alliance for Downtown New York; Commissioner Kathryn Garcia of the NYC Department of Sanitation; and Deputy Manhattan Borough President Matthew Washington to celebrate the Alliance's efforts to reach its new recycling milestone of 1,000 tons,” said Council Member Margaret S. Chin in a atstament. "No small feat, this achievement demonstrates the Alliance's commitment to building strong partnerships and creating innovative solutions that adapt to our growing, diverse urban landscape. I look forward to expanding on the progress we have made so that more New Yorkers can be part of the movement for a greener, more sustainable city.”
