Kicking off the new year, the City of Madison, Ga. will take over recycling services for citizens, including glass recycling, after terminating the city’s previous provider, Latham Home Sanitation Services.
“The City will now be its own hauler for curbside commingled recycling and curbside glass recycling will be added as a separate recycling stream as an option for Madison residents,” said Ken Kocher, the city’s information officer.
“Commingled recycling will continue to be picked up every Monday. However, unlike previously, when holidays fall on a Monday, recycling service will shift to Tuesday,” said Kocher. “Another noticeable change will be stricter adherence to not accepting non-recyclable materials. For instance, if recyclable materials are in a plastic bag, they will not be picked up. Customers may continue to use the green recycling totes, or they may purchase blue 35-gallon or 95-gallon wheeled carts from City Hall.”
Bins will cost $50 and $100 each for the 35-gallon and 95-gallon sizes.
Adding glass recycling to the program is exciting for city leaders. The glass will be delivered directly to Strategic Materials in College Park, which will be converted into powder or cullet to use for new glass containers, fiberglass, reflective paint, and more.
