Students at the St Lorcan’s Boys National School in Palmerstown, Dublin have been recognized as Battery Recycling Champions for collecting and saving 22,100 used batteries from the landfill.

WEEE Ireland’s Schools Battery Recycling Competition recognized the school and awarded it with the title and a €2,000 sports voucher. Over 80 schools took part in the competition, collecting 173,450 total used batteries, keeping thousands of hazardous materials out of landfills.

“The new European Battery Regulations, applicable from earlier this year, introduce comprehensive rules to manage the entire lifecycle of batteries within the EU,” said Leo Donovan, CEO of WEEE Ireland.

“Minimum material recovery targets for materials like cobalt, lithium, and nickel will apply to various battery types, ensuring valuable materials are recaptured. These new targets will require increased participation in battery recycling across all sectors, so we’d urge even more to join the drive this year and make a real difference in saving materials that are increasingly in scarce supply.”
