Fort Smith, Ark., Could Enter Recycling Contract with Third Rock Recycling and Pen Sales

In May, Fort Smith, Ark., Administrator Carl Geffken addressed the public after finding out that nearly 1,500 tons of residents’ recycling was dumped into a local landfill instead of being properly recycled. This action happened because the city’s recycling facility closed in November 2016, residents were not informed of the changes and the city hadn’t secured a new recycling processing contract.
Now, the Fort Smith Board of Directors is considering entering into a two-year contract with Third Rock Recycling and Pen Sales. The contract, which would allow the companies to provide residents with single stream recycling services, would cost the city approximately $14,000 per month.

Fort Smith could enter into a recycling agreement Tuesday, putting an end to more than 2½ years of dumping recycling into the landfill.
The Fort Smith Board of Directors will decide Tuesday whether to enter into a contract with Third Rock Recycling, LLC and Pen Sales, LLC to take the city’s recycling for at least two years.
Fort Smith has been dumping all of residents’ recyclable materials in the landfill since July 2016. The city dumped more than 89 percent of recyclable materials from October 2014 to June 2016 without notifying residents after the city’s contract with recycling vendor Smurfit KAPPA expired.
