New York Resumes Glass and Plastic Pickup, Recycling

New York -- The city will resume recycling glass and plastic after a one-year hiatus. Plastic recycling will commence on Tuesday, and glass recycling will begin April 1. The residential services were eliminated last year to save an estimated $40 million. Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty told news sources Thursday the city saved a little less than that estimate. Since the glass and plastic programs were cut, but paper and metal recycling were not affected, residents became confused about which commodities still were acceptable to include with recyclables. Therefore, newspaper recycling decreased as residents began including them with the trash.
