Phoenix Sees Increased Recycling During Pandemic
May 28, 2020
As a result of more people staying home during the pandemic, Phoenix, Ariz. has seen an increase of 20% in the collection of organic and recyclable waste. And, apart from minor changes to ensure safe collection procedures, there have been few changes to its existing recycling programs.
“The governor’s executive order indicates that clearly we are an essential business, an essential service and so we are performing our duties as such,” noted Joe Giudice, assistant director of the city’s Public Works Department.
To continue promoting sustainable practices, the city launched a new online program called Recycle+ that outlines better recycling habits and has downloadable activities for kids.
“Here are some resources to sort of keep the kiddos occupied and learn about good recycling practices and things like that,” said Giudice.
Phoenix’s ultimate goal is to become zero waste.
