Pittsburgh Mayor Proposes $500K for Residential Recycling Bins

Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto has proposed adding $500,000 to the city’s budget in 2020 to buy residential recycling bins.

Since recycling in the city became mandatory in 1991, residents have placed their recyclables in blue plastic bags, according to a Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 report. But those bags end up jamming equipment at recycling facilities and degrade the quality of recyclables.

The new 35-gallon blue containers proposed by Peduto will help consolidate recycling and make it more convenient for residents and the refuse haulers who empty them.

Mayor Bill Peduto has proposed a plan adding $500,000 to the city's budget in 2020 to buy recycling bins for city residents.

This would be followed by additional money in future years to expand the usage of the bins citywide.

Recycling has been mandatory in Pittsburgh since 1991 and residents have placed their recyclables in blue plastic bags. The bags clog equipment at recycling facilities, create roadside blight and degrade the quality of recyclables.
