University of Michigan Launches Zero Waste Gameday Initiative

The University of Michigan has teamed up with Sodexo, the university’s office of campus sustainability and the university’s athletics department to launch a zero waste gameday initiative at The Big House, which aims to keep nearly 90 percent of generated waste out of landfill.
To help reach its goal of achieving zero waste, the university has outfitted its stadium with new recycling bins and easy-to-read signage showcasing examples of compostable and recyclable products.
The university started its initiative off on the right foot during a home football game last Saturday by diverting 87 percent of its waste from landfill.

Despite more than 111,000 people filtering in and out of Michigan Stadium last Saturday, the University of Michigan's zero-waste gameday initiative kept almost 90 percent of generated waste from ending up in landfills.
Benjamin Blevins, director of communications for Michigan Athletics, said in an email interview the department is excited to be near its goal of 90 percent zero waste in the first week of the season, and credited those who worked behind the scenes.
