Dell Collects 2 Million Pounds of Computers

Round Rock, Texas -- Dell has announced it has collected more than 2 million pounds of computer waste during its 15-city recycling tour and doubled its monthly donations to a charity. If computers from collection events and online donations have sufficient memory and Pentium II processors, Dell gives them to the National Cristina Foundation (NCF), which disseminates them to a network of nonprofit organizations. Two environmental groups, San Jose, Calif.-based Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition and Austin-based Texas Campaign for the Environment, are planning a protest July 18 outside Dell’s annual shareholders’ meeting in Austin, according to news sources. The groups claim even though Dell collects large numbers of computers, many still end up in landfills.
