After a successful pilot and recognizing the need for the program, Long Beach, Calif., has announced it will make its mattress recycling program permanent.

Roughly 18,000 mattresses are illegally dumped in Long Beach annually, indicating a need for a recycling program to reduce that number. The pilot program began in August of this year and has collected almost 400 mattresses for recycling. The Mattress Recycling Council will collect mattresses from the drop-off location.

“By bringing used mattresses to the 24/7 drop-off location, residents prevent potent greenhouse gas emissions, free up city resources for other cleanup efforts, and contribute to clean and healthy streets throughout Long Beach,” said Director of Public Works Eric Lopez.
