Washington, D.C. -- Two environmental groups are planning to sue the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for not meeting a deadline to propose regulations that would reduce toxic vehicle emissions. In 2001, the EPA announced it would acquire data that had been missing from an analysis of mobile source air toxics and promulgate rules by July 1, 2003. The environmental groups, the U.S. Public Interest Research Group and the Sierra Club, have filed a 60-day notice of their intent to sue. They claim benzene and formaldehyde are particularly harmful chemicals originating from car, truck and bus emissions.
