THE WASHINGTON, D.C.-BASED National Recycling Coalition (NRC) announced three new partnerships at its 22nd Annual Congress and Exposition held Sept. 14 in Baltimore.
An agreement with Dell Computers will educate recycling professionals on how to manage and promote computer reuse and recycling. Dell and NRC are publishing a best practices guide, “No Computer Should Go to Waste,” and they also are sending an outreach toolkit to municipal and university recycling coordinators. A hands-on training workshop is scheduled Oct. 10-11 at Stanford University, Stanford, Calif. The two organizations expect to offer additional training opportunities in the future. Dell has joined other recycling companies on the NRC Leadership Council.
The NRC also will continue the Nike Reuse-A-Shoe partnership for a second year, expanding the program to all 50 states. Participating organizations will make a minimum contribution of 5,000 pairs of athletic shoes. After registering with NRC and Nike, the organizations will collect and store used athletic shoes. Then, the shoes will be shipped to the Reuse-A-Shoe recycling facility in Wilsonville, Ore. The recycled shoes are used on athletic surfaces, such as playgrounds. The NRC is planning a third partnership with AOL Time Warner and International Paper to host pilot projects in two U.S. cities on magazine recycling.
