New York -- The New York Department of Sanitation (NYDS) has announced the city’s Illegal Dumping Task Force seized and impounded 25 vehicles that were involved in illegal dumping incidents during June 2003. Thirteen vehicles were impounded in Brooklyn, five in Queens, four on Staten Island and three in the Bronx. Sanitation police officers can make arrests, impound vehicles and charge offenders up to $20,000. The dumper also must pay the city a clean-up cost for the illegally dumped material, which generally amounts to $150 per cubic yard. NYDS also uses an anonymous tip program to help reduce litter in neighborhoods.
