SWANA Names New CEO And Executive Director

The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), Silver Spring, Md., has selected John H. Skinner as its new chief executive officer and executive di-rector.

Currently, Skinner is on special assignment in Paris from the U.S. Environmental Protec-tion Agency (EPA), as a senior advisor to the United Nation's Envi-ronment Programme (UNEP) and the Indus-try and Environment Programmme. He joined UNEP in 1992.

Skinner's new ap-pointment resulted from a unanimous vote by SWANA's executive committee and president on behalf of its board of director.

"SWANA has experienced incredible growth in size and prominence over the past 15 years. We are confident that this will continue with John as our CEO," said Herb Flos-dorf, SWANA's president.

Skinner has been with EPA's Office of So-lid Waste since 1972 and is currently the president of the Inter-national Solid Waste As-sociation. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Hof-stra University and a Masters and Ph.D. in Aeronautical Engineer-ing from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Founded in 1961, SWANA has more than 5,500 members and 44 chapters throughout the United States and Canada.

Alliance Holding Co., Cleve-land, has acquired a majority interest in Republic Environ-mental Systems, Blue Bell, Pa.

United States Filter Corp, Palm Desert, Calif., has ac-quired Davis Water & Waste Industries, Thomasville, Ga.

Awards Carolyn S. Kon-heim, president of Konheim & Ketcham, Brooklyn, N.Y., has received the Air & Waste Man-agement Association's 1996 Waste Management Award.

Consolidation Harris Waste Management Group, Peachtree City, Ga., has mer-ged its Woodburn, Ore. and Cordele, Ga. operations.
