Call for Comments, Papers, Proposals

  • The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), Portland, is seeking comments on its hazardous waste business assistance services as well as the state's Toxic Use and Hazardous Waste Reduction program. The DEQ will hold open houses throughout the state Nov. 10-20. For details, call Sheila Monroe at (503) 229-5870.

  • The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), Silver Spring, Md., is calling for reports on research and innovations in solid waste on topics such as single stream recycling, bioreactors and landfill management. Reports and a biographical sketch are due Dec. 8, 2003, and will be presented at WASTECON, Sept. 21-23, 2004. For a list of topics, visit www.wastecon.org and click on “submit a paper.”



In Memoriam

  • John William “Bill” Estes died Sept. 27. Estes took over his father's businesses, Garbage Service Co. And Arizona Service Co., Phoenix and Tucson, Ariz., in 1937, and in 1954, Estes launched the Estes Service Co., Fort Worth, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Masonic Lodge, Montezuma Chapter, 345 W. Monroe, Phoenix, Ariz. 85003.



New Offices

  • Morbark Inc., Winn Mich., has opened a 10,000-square-foot product support facility in Conroe, Texas.

  • Asheville, N.C.-based Volvo Construction Equipment rental centers have opened new facilities in Bakersfield, Calif.; Kingston, N.Y.; Pensacola, Fla.; and Shreveport, La.
