San Francisco -- More than 40,000 volunteers participating in a public cleanup effort picked up more than 400,000 pounds of trash along beaches and inland areas of California. The 19th annual California Coastal Cleanup Day effort was sponsored by The Ocean Conservancy, Washington, D.C. Volunteers worked from Mexico to the Oregon border and went as far inland as Lake Tahoe. In 2002, 45,958 volunteers picked up 861,089 pounds of trash and recyclables throughout the state.
