Spokane, Wash. -- The Washington State Department of Ecology has proposed that Glen’s Metals, a former battery-recycling site in Pasco, Wash., be removed from the Model Toxics Control Act (MTCA) hazardous-sites list. State voters passed the MTCA in 1989, and the law included provisions that held the polluter responsible for the cleanup. Glen’s Metals constructed a lined evaporation pond in 1973 to store chemicals released from recycled batteries. A soil sample taken from the pond area in 1990 showed lead contamination. Now, the site is a parking lot and a shop facility for an asphalt company.
