Super Bowl Week Features Composting Project at Hotel (with video)

Super Bowl week is the backdrop for a pilot composting project by the JW Marriott hotel.

The hotel, which is housing the media center for the game in Indianapolis, is partnering with Republic Services Inc., GreenCycle, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, the Indiana Recycling Coalition, and the 2012 Indianapolis Super Bowl Host Committee, according to the committee’s 1st & Green program web site.

Food waste scraps from the JW Marriott kitchens will be collected in compostable bags and delivered to the GreenCycle facility, where they will be mixed with wood chips and converted into compost.

Recycling efforts at the Super Bowl also include the programs at Lucas Oil Stadium and the Indiana Convention Center. The Recycling Team, a group of volunteers, will  maintain recycling facilities at The Village, the Super Bowl epicenter in downtown Indianapolis open for 10 days to the public. Additionally, nearby restaurants and hotels will participate in recycling programs by collecting recyclables that will be picked up by volunteers.

Also, materials such as banners, office supplies, decorative items and other reusable materials will be collected and either donated to local non-profit organizations or made available at a modest cost to prevent them from going to a landfill, the committee said.
