Boise, Idaho has rolled out its successful composting program to more households with new food waste drop-off locations.

According to the city of Boise, 97% of eligible residents participate in its curbside composting program which diverts about one-third of all waste generated in Boise out of landfills. However, Lisa Knapp, materials management environment analyst, says that one in five homes, many of which are apartments, don’t have access to the compost program.

"We've targeted areas of the city that have a little bit more density of multifamily development," Knapp said.

Now, residents wanting to use the new bins will need to register online to unlock them, since the city tracks who uses the free service.
