Detroit, Mich. is expected to launch a composting program next year to cut down on food scraps that make it into the area’s landfills.

According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, Detroit produces an estimated 251 million pounds of food waste yearly. With grant money, the city will look to acquire supplies for residents and education resources and set up a site for compost drop-offs.

“Detroit boasts a rich food ecosystem, from urban farms to its vibrant chef community and one of the oldest farmers markets in the country. It’s time we close the loop by diverting food waste away from landfills,” said Tepfirah Rushdan, director of Detroit’s Office of Sustainability.
