Altona, N.Y., Seeks Government Funding for Landfill Upgrade, Expansion
The expansion and upgrade would bring the landfill from a class 2 facility to a class 1 facility.

The Altona, N.Y., Council has submitted an application to the Small Communities Fund for a shared project with the Municipality of Rhineland. The council is seeking funds from both federal and provincial governments for a landfill expansion and upgrade, which would bring the landfill from a class 2 facility to a class 1 facility.
The project is slated to cost $1.4 million and if it’s approved, the Government of Canada, the Government of Manitoba, the Town of Altona and the Municipality of Rhineland would split the cost.

Mayor Melvin Klassen says they're looking at bringing the class 2 facility up to a class 1, which is more expensive to operate."Because of the fact that every day we have to cover whatever has been brought in...with dirt or whatever. Also, we're going to have to have more personnel that are manning the landfill site."
