Volunteers in Washington D.C. have started a conservancy to clean the litter and other issues plaguing the area’s urban forests.

Nathan Harrington, the founder of Ward 8 Woods Conservancy, says three main challenges are hitting the forests: invasive vines, illegal dumping, and deforestation. Over the summer, more than 15 volunteers in the group helped clean up nearly 3,000 pounds of trash in Ward 8’s woods with additional piles of tires, TVs, and couches hauled away.

“I’ve always cared about the environment. I want to see all the acres of unusable forest here live up to its potential. I want to see hiking and biking trails and gathering spots where people can take refuge on hot days,” said Monita Austin, a Ward 8 Woods Conservancy.
