NJ County Works to Extend its Local Landfill’s Lifespan

Work is underway in Burlington County, N.J., to extend the life of its landfill by about 10 years. It’s the sixth and final phase of the expansion project.

The county landfill receives about 300,000 tons of waste a year, according to Sheehan.
The second landfill is expected to be filled by 2018, he said.
The first landfill was closed in 2000. The wedge is being dug where a road used to be. The road ran between the first landfill, which started collecting trash in 1989, and the second one, which started collecting trash in 1998.
The first landfill is 54 acres; the second is 69 acres.
