Thanksgiving is quickly approaching, meaning food waste is about to see an uptick in landfills. Thankfully, there are a ton of solutions for homes to reduce food waste output during the overindulging holiday.

OSPRIG has offered a handful of solutions to food waste to help fellow Oregon residents keep the materials out of the state’s landfills. First, families should plan and try not to buy too much, preventing waste from the start. Additionally, understanding date labels can help avoid throwing out food before it actually expires.

Leftovers are a big part of the holiday and should be looked at as a solution to food waste. Food can be repurposed the following days or even frozen for a later time.

Excess food can also be donated if possible, and if not, composting is an environmentally friendly option.
