Republic Services Seeks Permission to Increase Volume, Extend Operation Life

In an effort to keep the Ottawa Farms Landfill in Polkton Township, Mich., from running out of space in approximately seven years, Republic Services is submitting an application to more than double the total volume of the landfill and extend the landfill’s operation life by 60 years.
The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality is reviewing the proposed expansion application, and it’s currently accepting written comments from the public until August 15.

The owners of the Ottawa Farms Landfill in Polkton Township are seeking permission to more than double the total volume of the landfill and increase the life of the operation for another 60 years.
If the application isn't approved, the landfill would run out of space in approximately seven years, according to Debbie Nurmi, environmental manager for Republic Services, which owns the landfill.
Republic Services has applied to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality for the expansion. It would extend the landfill horizontally by 51 acres to the north and east of the current operation and allow the mound to grow vertically by an additional 70 feet above the current permitted height.
