The city of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, is constructing a landfill gas-to-energy facility.

The city said on its website that Saskatoon Light & Power is close to completing its gas well drilling at the city’s landfill.

Saskatoon officials expect the facility to begin power production by summer 2013.  The facility will feature two 800 kilowatt generators. The 1,600 total kilowatts is enough to power 1,300 homes.

The projects consists of a landfill gas collection system and a power generation facility. The drilling began in May, and now there are 29 vertical wells in the capped area of the landfill.

It is the first power generation facility built by the city since 1911.
