Wichita State University and the non-profit organization, Starkey, have seen success in their partnership to reduce electronic waste.
Thus far, the partnership has kept roughly 15,000 pounds of electronics from Wichita State from ending up in landfills. In 2023, Starkey collected 188,688 pounds of electronics. The collected devices are transferred to a broker who sells them to American companies who will create new products from recycled materials.
Starkey was founded in 1930 and is the oldest community-based non-profit disability organization in Sedwick County. The non-profit employes people with intellectual disabilities in the community who disassembly old electronics and then sort individual parts for recycling.
