Casella Expects Odors at Upstate NY Landfill to Diminish

Casella has completed the installation of 31 new gas collection wells at the Ontario County Landfill in New York. The installation of those wells, and the drilling that’s gone along with it, has caused a recent issue of odors emanating from the site that has bothered local residents.
Over the next month and a half, all the gas wells will be connected to the vacuum system, which will further reduce incidents of off-site odors.

As of Dec. 22, however, Casella has completed the installation of 31 new gas collection wells. By the end of the week, those wells will be connected to the active collection system to produce gas to run the turbines at the electricity generating plant on the landfill site.

The landfill is in the midst of construction of a 43.5-acre expansion within the existing footprint of the 389-acre landfill on Routes 5&20. The methane gas collection wells are part of that expansion, which will extend the life of the landfill to 2028, based on current annual permitted trash tonnage of 2,999 tons per day.
