The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) will make its auto show debut at the New York International Auto Show, held at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City from March 30 to April 8. At the show, DSNY will showcase its HySweep, a new electric hybrid street sweeper.

“We are tasked with keeping New York City healthy, safe and clean, and having a modernized fleet that is safer and greener complements our mission,” said Kathryn Garcia, commissioner of DSNY, in a statement. “We’ve reduced unleaded fuel by nearly half since 2005, and today, our entire diesel fleet runs on 20 percent biodiesel fuel. Plus, we’re using more hybrid and electric vehicles than ever before, including heavy-duty vehicles like the HySweep.”

The HySweep is the latest addition to a fleet of more than 6,000 collection trucks, salt spreaders, front-end loaders and street sweepers. It was designed by US Hybrid and Global Environmental Products, and it has a significantly lower noise level than standard street sweepers.

The sweeper, which has a retail price of $358,800, includes safety features such as large windows and rear view cameras that reduce blind spots.
