Houston-based Waste Management and Kent, Wash.-based PetroCard have opened a compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling station in Camden, N.J. The station will service Waste Management’s area CNG fleet and also is open to the public.

Waste Management and PetroCard, which provides fuel management services to fleets, funded the construction of the station. Clean Energy was the construction contractor.

“CNG is an environmentally friendly, alternative fuel that is ready and available today,” said Steve Tolton, CEO of PetroCard, in a press release. “Our partnership with Waste Management has made it more convenient for fleets and consumers with CNG vehicles to reduce emissions and save money. This fueling station will enable additional private and public fleet operators to take advantage of the economic and environmental benefits of CNG.”

Waste Management also recently purchased 14 CNG collection trucks for use in the Camden area and plans to have a total of 45 CNG vehicles in use the market by the end of summer, which would represent about half of its fleet in the Camden area, according to the company.

“We are dedicated to doing business in the most sustainable way possible, while providing our customers with outstanding service,” said John Morris, area vice president for Waste Management of New Jersey, in a press release. “Natural gas powered vehicles run cleaner and quieter, improving air quality and reducing noise pollution. Our 45 new CNG trucks will reduce emissions equivalent to taking 3,500 gasoline-powered vehicles off the road.”

According to estimates from the U.S. Department of Energy that Waste Management cited in its press release, CNG trucks reduce particulate matter emissions by 86 percent, carbon monoxide emissions by 80 percent, nitrogen oxide emissions by 32 percent and greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent when compared to traditional diesel trucks.
