Earlier this week, WM held a ceremony at its Pittsburgh recycling facility to celebrate the completion of new equipment upgrades.

The ceremony was held to celebrate the completion of $23 million upgrades made to the facility using new equipment based on technology and AI. The new upgrades allow materials to be sorted at a much faster rate.

These upgrades are part of WM’s $1 billion investment in upgrading its facilities nationwide between 2022 and 2026.

“We're now able to take plastics that were labeled five, which is polypropylene,” said Chris Pilzer, capitol area director of sustainable growth at WM.

“We do accept glass, but later this year we'll have a glass cleaning system to make a better end-use product. So, the updates can be seen within the additional materials accepted, the automation, and the technology.”
