Wayne County, Miss. Officials Look into Solutions for Hazardous, Construction Waste

Wayne County, Miss. Officials are looking into ways to approach issues regarding hazardous waste in the area and an alternative landfill for construction waste.

Wayne County, Miss. Officials are looking into ways to approach issues regarding hazardous waste in the area and an alternative landfill for construction waste.

Currently, leaders are looking into plans for an amnesty day where they will collect and properly dispose of resident’s hazardous materials such as paint, oil, or antifreeze. The county has received $28,000 for the program to keep hazardous materials from mixing.

In addition, the county is doing a study to determine the need for an alternative landfill for materials that quickly decay, such as construction materials, bricks, wood, or drywall. However, Sean Dunlap, Grants Administrator, says more answers are needed before the plan can go through.

“Do we have the resources necessary?” Dunlap said. “The site necessary? And all the things in place to look at a C&D landfill that would be beneficial, not just to Wayne County, but to Jones County, Jasper County, Clarke County—all the counties of the Pine Belt that would choose to possibly use that.”
