Throwing a deceased furry friend into the trash for eventual burial in a landfill is too unbearable for many pet owners. The act also proved unpalatable for officials in Richmond, Va., where the bodies of two bears were recovered from a landfill. The black bears had been euthanized after one of them — officials never determined which one — allegedly bit a four-year-old boy who had stuck his hand through the chain-link fence surrounding the bear habitat at Maymont, an estate in Richmond.

After being recovered, the bodies of Baby and Buster were cremated, and the remains were buried near the bear habitat. Nearly 500 people attended the service, which was opened by a Boy Scout troop and included a speech from the mayor of Richmond.
