Sometimes cleaning only makes things harder to find. Such was the case with more than $31,000 in drug money that went from a Somerville, Mass., evidence room to a landfill.
During a spring cleaning of evidence rooms, a technician stashed the money in the drawer of an old desk. When other officers began collecting furniture for the trash pile, the desk was swept along with other items. By the time the technician realized what had happened, the desk had already been sent to a landfill in New Jersey where it was buried beneath hundreds of thousands of pounds of compacted waste. At this point, Jimmy Hoffa may have a better chance of being uncovered.
