Denver planning Colorado’s first landfill gas plant

The city of Denver has proposed the construction of a gas-to-energy plant using methane from two of the city’s landfills. The Lowry Landfill and the Denver Arapahoe Disposal Site are both owned by Houston-based Waste Management. According to a Rocky Mountain News report, Xcel Energy would buy the electricity, which would power an estimated 3,000 customers annually.

The project is still in the discussion stages and subject to approval by the Environmental Protection Agency and Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. Nevertheless, officials quoted in the Rocky Mountain News say the plant is set to begin construction this spring for completion by late summer. The facility would help Xcel to comply with recent Colorado legislation requiring investment in renewable energy resources.
