Earlier this year, the City of Evanston, Ill., reached a settlement with its waste provider Advanced Disposal. Now, city officials and an environmental group of citizens are trying to figure out what to do about the settlement.

Advanced Disposal had challenged the city’s $2 per ton fee imposed on waste transferred through a shared waste transfer station. As a result to the settlement, the city got to keep all of its waste transfer station fees that were collected since 2011, which comes to a total of more than $1.26 million.

To figure out how those funds will be used, Ald. Delores Holmes would like to hold a meeting with residents to discuss options before making an ultimate decision.

The city reached a settlement with Advanced Disposal earlier this year on a lawsuit the company brought in response to city actions in 2010 and 2011, where the company had challenged a $2 per ton fee the city imposed on waste transferred through the station. Under the settlement, the city got to keep all the waste transfer station fees collected since 2011, amounting to more than $1.26 million, City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz and Kimberly Richardson, assistant to the city manager, said in a memo to aldermen.
