Washington, D.C. -- The National Solid Wastes Management Association (NSWMA) has published "Managing Solid Waste Facilities to Prevent Odor," a report describing methods to control odors at landfills and transfer stations. The report also explains why garbage smells, the causes of odors at landfills and the factors that influence odor strength, according to the association.
For example, the type of waste (i.e., sludge waste) and the time of day can influence odor strength. Different types of landfills have special odor issues. Construction and demolition (C&D) waste may include gypsum wallboard presenting a different odor management issue than municipal solid waste. Short-term storage of waste at transfer stations is different than the long-term management of waste at landfills, according to the NSWMA.
A copy of the report is available through NSWMA's Publications Department at 800-424-2869 or [email protected].
