The National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA) has filed comments with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) in support of Waste Management’s request for an exemption from the agency’s Hours of Service (HOS) and Electronic Logging Device (ELD) rules.

In the comments by NWRA President and CEO Darrell Smith, the association cites the exemptions granted by FMCSA to the ready-mix concrete and asphalt industries and requests the same for the waste and recycling industry based upon its similarities to them.

“NWRA calls upon FMCSA to recognize the unique nature of waste and recycling collection operations and create an industrywide exemption as it already has done for the ready-mix concrete and asphalt pavement industries,” said Smith in a statement.

These comments come as part of an NWRA-led effort on behalf of the entire waste and recycling industry. The association has encouraged and coordinated comments in support of Waste Management’s request from member companies including those submitted by Republic Services, Waste Connections and Homewood Disposal.
