Russia produces approximately 5.4 to 5.6 billion tons of trash a year. Of that total, half is recycled and half gets stored in the ground.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has taken action to correct this problem and has ordered the People’s Front to control the recycling issue. Putin said the sphere of waste recycling "is very criminalized," and thus ordered to the People's Front to control the situation with recycling.
