Seneca Falls, N.Y., Seeks to Ban New Solid Waste Facilities

Officials in Seneca Falls, N.Y., are seeking to ban construction of new solid waste facilities in the town. The existing Seneca Meadows landfill would be exempt from the law under the current terms and conditions of its existing operating permit.

The Finger Lakes Times has more:

During public comment, Cooperstown attorney Doug Zamelis distributed copies of the proposed local law. Zamelis represents Waterloo Container, a company owned by the Lutz family that is across Route 414 from the landfill.

“It is based on a local law I wrote for a town in Chautauqua County that was upheld by the courts,” Zamelis said. “Introduction of this local law would start the process. It’s not a zoning law and does not need to go the (Seneca County) Planning Board for review. You just need to schedule a public hearing.”

Zamelis received applause as he left the podium.
