Slow Down to Get Around Law to Take Effect in Oklahoma on Nov. 1

Oklahoma is the latest state to enact “Slow Down to Get Around” legislation aimed at helping protect sanitation workers. The law in the state takes effect on Nov. 1. The law was signed by Governor Mary Fallin on April 26.

Oklahoma joined 11 other states that have enacted Slow Down to Get Around legislation, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, New York, North Carolina, Virginia, Wisconsin and West Virginia.

New York most recently joined the list passing similar legislation in September.

Passing slow down to get around legislation has been a central part of the industry’s strategy to improve safety.

Last month, a report from the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) documented that 98 fatalities directly related to municipal solid waste (MSW) collection, processing and disposal occurred in the United States in the 12-month period between July 1, 2015 and June 30, 2016.
